Part of the fun of bird watching is identifying the bird you have seen and spotting a colourful bird can be quite wonderful. In this article we will look at a list of 15 of black and yellow birds from across the world. We will have pictures to aid in identification, along with information on the measurements. Also we will look at where they are native to, the habitat and diets. I have included both males and female picture where able.

Male Eurasian Golden Oriole
The European Golden Oriole is a very attractive bird and has beautiful black and yellow markings as you can see from the above picture. The black around the eyes make it stand out. With black wings and a black tail against the bright yellow of its head. The female is less colourful as shown in the picture below. The female’s colours can vary depending on the time of year. As the picture below shows they are more yellow – green, brown and buff coloured.

Male American Goldfinch
The male American Goldfinch is a lovely example of a black and yellow bird. As you can see from the picture above the sunshine yellow of its head, face and main body are beautifully bright, and with a black cap, wings and tail with a flash of white through the wings. The females are as usual more of a olive green – brown colour with some yellow on their head and face and brown wings as can be seen by the picture below.

The American Goldfinch is a social bird usually seen in flocks of the same species and is known for a lovely song voice.

Male European Goldfinch
The European Goldfinch as pictured above is a striking looking finch and very noticeable when in flight. Apart from the call as it’s flying it is the flash of colour which gets your attention. It is probably more known for its red face colouring, but I think it also qualifies for our list of black and yellow birds. Also if you see one there are likely to be a couple more as they are known as social birds and tend to feed in flocks. Males and females are mostly alike, the females are duller in colouring as seen in the picture below.

Male Lesser Goldfinch
Another finch is the male lesser goldfinch, as you can see from the picture above it is not as brightly coloured as the previous finches, however still a lovely bird.THe females are even less colourful.

Male Wilson’s Warbler
The Wilson’s Warbler is a sweet little bird. As you can see from the picture above showing a male, it has a mainly yellow body and a black cap, the female cap is almost green as can be seen in the picture below. They also have olive green wings and back. Noted for their chattering song.

Male Cirl Bunting
This sparrow-like bird is related to the yellowhammer. The above picture shows the male has black and yellow stripes on its face, unlike the female who is plainer, as seen in the picture below. Both sexes have a yellow rump. Although these birds were once seen in most of Southern Uk they are now confined to Devon, where traditional farming methods have helped the population from the brink.

As seen above the male Siskin has a black cap and yellow – green plumage with black. The females however are more grey-green as seen below.

Black hooded oriole
The male black headed oriole as seen in the above picture is another delightful specimen of a black and yellow bird. As its name suggest it has a black hood which goes down the throat area, is set off by the red eyes and beak. They have black on their wings and tail, the rest of the plumage is sunshine yellow. The female looks like a washed out version of the male as you can see from the picture below.

Great Tit
The Great tit is the largest of the Tit family in Europe and the UK. They have a glossy black cap, bib and nape. The yellow breast and under belly are not as bright as the Blue tit, as seen above. Again the females have the same colouring just not as bright.

Male Common yellowthroat
This sweet little male song bird has a distinctive black mask across its face bordered with a silver grey line of feathers. As its name suggests its throat and breast is a beautiful bright yellow. The rest of the bird is olive yellow – green as shown above.
The female as pictured below still has a yellow throat and breast albeit not as vibrant. The rest of its colouring is mainly buff – brown

Male Grace’s Warbler
Grace’s warbler is a tiny bird with a yellow throat and partly breast, the rest of the breast is white, with a yellow streak above the eyes and mainly grey back and wings and tail, with black and white, as can be seen in the picture above. The female has the same yellow throat, breast and streak over the eye, however they have a buff colouring to the back, wings and tails, although they do still have the white bars on the wings.

Male Yellow headed blackbird
As you can see from the above picture it is a very striking bird with a golden yellow head, throat and breast is the Male Yellow headed blackbird. It has a black mask black back, wings and tail. They have a white patch on their wings which is more noticeable in flight.
The females, as shown below, are less colourful but still have some yellow on their throat and breast, with some yellow also on their faces. The rest of their plumage is brown, just like a blackbird.

Male Evening Grosbeak
A golden yellow flash above the eyes and on the body with highlights of black and some white makes this finch wonderful to spot. This bird is quite dumpy for its size and like most finches has a thick set beak for seed eating.
Female Evening Grosbeak
The female still has the thick set beak and is mostly grey – buff – brown in colour, although you can see some yellow around the neck aspect, as shown in the picture above.

Male Western Tanager
The male Western Tanager is a colourful bird as seen in the picture above. Mainly yellow an black plumage it has a distinctive orange – red face and head. It is a migratory bird and has a varied habitat due to migration.

The female as in the picture above demonstrates the dullness of the females compared to the males, as with most females in the bird world.

They have a diet of mainly insects but they will include fruits and berries from autumn to winter time.
Male Hooded Warbler
The male hooded warbler as seen above has a striking appearance due to the colour marking to its face. Which is where it most likely got its name, as it does appear to have a black hood on. Its bright yellow face beams out making it look like a happy little bird.
Female Hooded Warbler
The female is more of an olive green – yellow in colouring as can be seen above.
